The water inlet valve is the electrically-controlled valve that opens to allow water into the ice maker during each fill cycle. When this valve fails, no water enters regardless of supply pressure. This is one of the most common ice maker repairs.
4. Clogged Water Filter
Most modern refrigerators with ice makers filter the water supply through an in-line filter. A heavily clogged filter restricts water flow below the threshold needed for ice production. Replacing the filter every six months is recommended maintenance — and is sometimes the only fix needed.
5. Faulty Ice Maker Module
The ice maker module controls the entire cycle — fill, freeze, harvest, and eject. When it fails, the ice maker may be completely inactive, stuck mid-cycle, or producing misshapen ice. In many cases the entire module is replaced as a unit.
6. Freezer Temperature Too High
Ice makers require a freezer temperature of approximately 0 to 5 degrees Fahrenheit. If the freezer is running warmer than this, ice production slows or stops. A freezer temperature issue is a separate diagnosis that should be addressed as part of the same service call.
